Many top professional athletes have become vegan pro athletes. Some of the reasons for the change is because of better performance, better recovery times, and overall improved health.
Vegan pro athletes have a diet consisting of many different options. It is very important to these professional athletes that a plant-based diet be the crucial ingridient to a long and successful career.
I am going to list six professional athletes that have adopted the plant-based diet. These professional athletes perform at the highest level in their respective sport.
Kendrick Farris -Professional Weightlifter
Kendrick Farris is an American Olympic weightlifter who has been a vegan since 2014. He finished 11th in his weight class at the 2016 Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro. Kendrick has also participated in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London where he placed 10th, silver medalist at the 2013 Summer Universiade, and the Pan-American Champion in 2010.
Kendrick has proven that you can be a successful vegan and lift any heavy weight you want.
Venus Williams -Professional Tennis Player
Venus Williams is one of the most famous American tennis players in the world. Venus holds four Oplympic gold medals and has won prestigious Wimbledon women’s singles title five times.
In 2011, she was diagnosed with Sjogren’s Syndrome and with the recommendation of her doctor, she decided to adopt the vegan diet. Before she adopted the vegan diet, her symptoms where extreme fatigue and joint pain. After adopting this diet, Venus has been better than ever.
Tom Brady -Professional Football Player
Tom Brady is an American football quarterback who has won six NFL Superbowl Championships with the New England Patriots. In 2002, he led them to their first superbowl victory.
He is a big influencer to his colleagues by encouraging them to follow in his foot steps and switch to a plant-based diet. The quarterback’s diet consist of 80% vegetables and he avoids starchy foods like bread and potatoes. He incorporates protein shakes and consumes 25 glasses of electrolyte-infused water a day.
Hannah Teter -Professional Snowboader
Hannah Teter is an American snowboader and three-time Olympic medalist. Hannah has loved the environment since childhood. She was taught to appreciate it from an early age.
After winning her gold medal in 2010, she adopted the vegan lifestyle. In an interview, Hannah stated that since adopting this lifestyle, she feels stronger than she has ever been. She also states that she is stronger physically, mentally, and emotionally. Hannah states that since starting her plant-based journey, it has opened up more doors to being an athlete.
She feels like a new person and new athlete.
Tia Blanco -Professional Surfer
Tia Blanco is a surfer from Puerto Rico. She won a gold medal at the 2015 International Surfing Association(ISA) Open Women’s World Surfing Championship in Popoya, Nicaragua and again in 2016 in Playa Jac’o, Coasta Rica.
She grew up on a vegetarian diet because her mom was a strict vegetarian. She has stated that her mom did not force a vegetarian diet on her but that was the food she was cooking at home.
Tia adopted the plant-based diet in 2013. After doing her own research, she chose to go vegan and has been dedicated to this lifestyle ever since.
Ruth Heidrich -Professional Runner
Ruth Heidrich is an American runner who was named “One of the Ten Fittest Women in North America”. She adopted a vegan diet after being diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer when she was at the age of 47.
Just after two years, she became the first vegan athlete to run the Kona Ironman Triathlon. Ruth is 83 years old and accomplished great success throughout her career. She has competed in over 900 races, 6 Ironman Triathlons, 8 gold medals in the U.S. Senior Olympics, and 67 marathons including Boston, New York, and Moscow.
